These pictures are from a couple of weeks ago when we celebrated our friend James’ birthday. We had the most amazing day in the garden with a bubble machine (would it be weird to buy myself one?) and then headed to Frankie and Benny’s for dinner. I made a chocolate Guinness cake for his birthday cake but it went a bit disastrously so I covered up the mistakes with layers and layers of chocolate and coloured icing. Nevertheless, I was a tiny bit proud of myself for cutting a support structure out of wrapping paper tubes and cardboard and managing to stack the cake without incident. After dinner, they gave James about fifty balloons which to be honest were a little difficult to fit in the car.

p.s. Chocolate Guinness cake is the most delicious gooiest chocolate cake you can imagine (less good when you mess it up as much as I did), and it stays gooey and moist for days and days, seriously, try it try it try it. The recipe is in the Hummingbird Bakery book “Cake Days” which is a really really good book.
